Turning Notes Into Flashcards That Actually Work
Most flashcards fail before you ever review them — not because the scheduling was wrong, but because the card itself was badly written. A card that asks too much, or too little, or nothing at all, wastes every future review it's ever shown in. Turning notes into good flashcards is a skill on its own, separate from spaced repetition itself, and it's worth doing deliberately.
One card, one fact
The most common mistake is cramming an entire paragraph of notes into a single card — "Explain the causes of World War I" — and expecting spaced repetition to handle it. It can't, not well. When a card covers five ideas at once, you can't grade it honestly: you might recall three of the five and blank on the other two, but the algorithm only sees one right/wrong answer for the whole bundle. This is called the atomic cardprinciple — each card should test exactly one fact, one relationship, or one step. Break "causes of WWI" into five separate cards, one per cause, and each one gets scheduled on its own accurate timeline instead of being dragged around by the others.
Atomic cards feel like more work upfront, but they're actually less work over time: a fact you already know well graduates to long intervals and stops appearing, while the one fact you keep missing stays in rotation — instead of the whole five-fact bundle repeating every time any part of it is shaky.
Avoid yes/no and vague-recall questions
"Is mitosis a type of cell division?" is a bad flashcard. You can guess yes/no correctly half the time with zero knowledge, and even when you genuinely know the answer, answering it teaches you almost nothing about the actual mechanism. The same problem shows up in softer form with vague prompts like "What do you know about the French Revolution?" — there's no clear right answer, so you can't grade yourself consistently, and the algorithm has nothing reliable to schedule against.
Good flashcard questions have a single, specific, checkable answer: "What are the four phases of mitosis, in order?" or "What event triggered the start of the French Revolution in 1789?" If you can't state the exact correct answer in one sentence before you write the question, the question needs to be narrowed further.
Cloze deletion: turning notes into cards almost for free
Rewriting every note as a question-and-answer pair is slow, and it's often unnecessary. Cloze deletion — blanking out a key word or phrase directly inside a sentence from your notes — is usually faster and just as effective:
"The mitochondria is the [...] of the cell."
"World War I began in the year [...]."
Cloze cards work well specifically because they preserve context. Your brain isn't recalling a fact in isolation — it's recalling it in the sentence structure you'll actually need it in, which is closer to how you'll be asked about it on an exam or need to use it later. They're also fast to generate: highlight the term in your notes that you'd want to be tested on, blank it, done. If a sentence has two separate facts worth testing, make two cloze cards from it rather than blanking both at once — that's the atomic card rule again.
Turning a lecture or textbook chapter into cards
A practical process that scales to a full chapter of notes:
- Read first, card second.Don't try to make cards while reading for the first time — you won't yet know what's actually important versus supporting detail.
- Mark, don't transcribe.On the second pass, underline or highlight only the specific facts, terms, and relationships you'd be expected to recall — not full sentences.
- One highlighted fact → one card. Convert each marked item into either a direct question or a cloze deletion, whichever is faster for that fact.
- Skip anything you could re-derive.If a fact follows logically from something else you're already making a card for, you usually don't need a separate card for it — you're better off spending that review budget on facts that don't have an obvious shortcut.
None of this needs to be perfect on the first pass — a card that turns out to be too broad or too vague can always be split or rewritten later, and Mnemova's exercise formats give you cloze and direct-recall options built in, so you don't need a separate tool to apply any of this.
